THE OFFICIAL HOME OF CHUBCO OVENS
Chubco ovens were solidly-built for over 50 years and many of them are still performing reliably for their owners. The most common models are: H, K, KP, Middle Marshall Jr (MMJr), EZ8, as well as BE/W Chubco models Super, Standard (STD), and Modular. Since the ovens were built to a very sturdy standard, they are almost always worth repairing or rebushing. Bushings are designed to be replaced after a certain amount of wear. If they are not, the wear continues into the shaft and the repair cost increases dramatically. Even with the increased wear, most owners choose to make the repair to maintain the oven. Proper lubrication procedures can greatly extend the life of bushings. Using the correct lube and a specially-contoured lube tip on a regular basis (Chubco recommended weekly) is highly recommended. Both of these, as well as any repair parts, can be ordered from Peterson Technical Services. We are always happy to provide any information, service or parts to help prolong the life of these well-constructed ovens.
Chubco Maintenance Guide
WEEKLY:
Tray Bushings: For tray and stabilizer arm bushings apply 1 to 2 pumps (from ordinary grease gun) on each bushing every 40-60 hours of operation. Fresh grease should become visible when sufficient grease has been applied. There are three points per shelf. One on each of the spider castings for each shelf and one on the stabilizer ring.
Shelves: Check shelves for level and level as needed.
MONTHLY:
Clean Interior: Remove any dropped pans and product, clean as needed, check burners and make sure that they are burning clean and fire bricks are in place, Clean holes in burner castings and venturis as needed, replace broken or cracked fire bricks as needed.
Main Bearing: The main bearing should be lubed with as much Moly Grease as it will accept (usually less than one pump); do NOT over-grease. Overgreasing will destroy the bearing seals, which can greatly reduce main bearing life.
Door Gearbox: Find the 3/8 flathead screw at about the center of the hearthplate; locate the obvious mark on the screw that indicates proper oil level (acts as a dipstick). Add Hi-Temp Oven Oil to the proper level.
Motor Belt: Inspect motor drive belt and tighten or replace if needed.
Drive Chain: Inspect drive chain and sprockets. Lube chain with spray chain lube (available from Grainger part #3HY54). Tighten chain if needed and check sprocket alignment, correct if needed.
Stabilizer Rollers: Inspect stabilizer rollers; there should be about .006" to about .012" (about the thickness of a match book cover) clearance between one roller and the stabilizer ring with the ring in contact with the other. Adjust the stabilizer roller support to maintain clearance as needed.
Exhaust Fan: If installed, lube fan bearings, inspect belt, tighten or replace as needed.
SEMI ANNUALLY:Drive Gearbox: Locate the level-plug about 1 to 1-1/2" from the bottom of the gearbox. Remove the plug; a small weep of oil should be visible. If not, remove the vent plug (on gearbox top), add Hi-Temp Oven Oil as needed until oil begins to weep from level-plug. Finish by re-installing plug(s).
Clean and inspect interior, exterior, and insulation level, add insulation as needed.
Regular lubrication will greatly prolong the oven life and time between major repairs.
Chubco Oven Lubrication Guide
Tray Bushings:
Chubco experimented with several types of lubrication and found the optimum bushing life is obtained by using Hi-Temp Moly Grease. Molybdenum disulfide provides lubrication long after the grease carrier has dripped off or burned away. For tray and stabilizer arm bushings apply 1 to 2 pumps (from ordinary grease gun) on each bushing every 40-60 hours of operation. With few exceptions, the special Grease Tip is best for proper grease insertion into the bushing. The available 12" extension is not necessary, but is more convenient for lube-point access.Main Bearing:
The main bearing should be lubed monthly with as much Moly Grease as it will accept (usually less than one pump); do NOT over-grease. Over-greasing will destroy the bearing seals, which can greatly reduce main bearing life.Door Gearbox:
(Applies to Model H & Super, only - check monthly) Find the 3/8" flat-head screw at about the center of the hearthplate; locate the obvious mark on the screw that indicates proper oil level (acts as a dipstick). Add Hi-Temp Oven Oil to the proper level.Drive Gearbox:
Locate the level-plug about 1 to 1-1/2" from the bottom of the gearbox. Remove the plug; a small weep of oil should be visible. If not, remove the vent plug (on gearbox top), add Hi-Temp Oven Oil as needed until oil begins to weep from level-plug. Re-install plug(s). Check at 6 month intervals. Regular lubrication will greatly prolong the oven life and time between major repairs.
